The Aluva Municipality in Ernakulam district has shut a restaurant near the Aluva railway station after its health wing discovered stale food and unhygienically stored ingredients during a surprise inspection on Wednesday. The civic body took the action as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety enforcement and protect consumers from unsafe food.

Health Wing Detects Food Safety Violations

Municipal health officials inspected eight hotels and eateries across the municipality during the enforcement drive. They found food safety violations only at Zaithoon Restaurant, where they discovered stale food and ingredients stored under unhygienic conditions. The inspection team, led by municipal health inspectors Anil Kumar and Sindhu A. V., documented the violations and initiated immediate action against the establishment.

Officials Seize Spoiled Meat and Other Food Items

The health wing seized spoiled raw meat, fried meat, biriyani, and other food items that it declared unfit for human consumption. Officials said the restaurant had stored some of the food in freezers for prolonged periods and allegedly reheated it before serving it to customers, increasing the risk of foodborne illness.

Municipality Orders Closure Until Compliance

Following the inspection, the municipality directed the restaurant to stop operations immediately. Officials will submit a report to the Food Safety Department for further examination of the seized food samples. The municipality has also instructed the establishment to adopt proper hygiene and safe food handling practices. Authorities will allow the restaurant to reopen only after it fully complies with prescribed food safety and sanitation standards.

Municipality Intensifies Food Safety Enforcement

Municipal Chairperson Saiji Jolly announced that the municipality will intensify inspections of hotels and eateries in the coming days. She warned that the civic body will take strict action against establishments that violate food safety regulations.

She also urged food business operators to maintain proper hygiene, store food safely, and uphold quality standards to protect public health. The municipality reiterated that regular inspections and strict enforcement remain essential to preventing foodborne illnesses and ensuring safe food for consumers.
