Key Update
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notice to quick-commerce platform Zepto following a consumer complaint alleging the delivery of expired gram flour (besan). The regulator has directed Zepto Marketplace Pvt Ltd to investigate the complaint, provide relevant records, and explain the corrective measures taken to prevent similar incidents.
Consumer Flags Expired Besan Delivery
According to FSSAI, a complaint on social media platform X alleged that a customer received two packs of besan past their use-by date. Both packs reportedly carried the marking “USE BY: 12-09-2026”, indicating September 12, 2026, as the use-by date. The complaint raised concerns about the delivery of food products beyond their permitted use-by dates.
FSSAI Seeks Explanation and Corrective Action
FSSAI has directed Zepto to verify the complaint and submit relevant records, including order and delivery details, warehouse information, seller particulars, and product details. The regulator has also asked the company to explain the root cause of the incident and confirm whether it has taken the necessary corrective measures. These include withdrawing the affected stock, notifying the customer, issuing a refund, and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents. Additionally, FSSAI has sought a written response from Zepto regarding the complaint and the action taken.
Focus on Food Safety in Quick Commerce
The notice highlights the importance of ensuring that food products sold and delivered through quick-commerce platforms comply with food safety requirements. Proper stock monitoring, expiry-date checks, and effective inventory management are essential to prevent the delivery of expired products to consumers.
