Delhi Police Bust Adulterated Desi Ghee Racket, Seize 1,625 kg of Fake Stock

Key Development

Delhi Police Crime Branch busted three illegal units producing adulterated desi ghee in northeast Delhi, seized 1,625 kg of spurious stock, and arrested six people, officials said on Thursday. Officers conducted coordinated raids last week in Shiv Vihar, Karawal Nagar, and Old Mustafabad after receiving intelligence about large-scale adulteration aimed at exploiting high festive demand during Dussehra and Diwali.

Fake Ghee Production and Seizure

Police recovered 105 tins containing 1,625 kg of adulterated ghee, along with gas cylinders, stoves, chemical flavouring agents, and other equipment used in the production process. Investigators found that the accused purchased vanaspati (Dalda) and cheap refined oils, heated and mixed them, and added chemical flavouring agents and synthetic colours to imitate pure desi ghee. They packed the product in tins and packets resembling reputed brands and sold it to dairies, shops, and distributors.

Health Risk to Consumers

The police warned that the crude and unsafe process posed a serious threat to unsuspecting consumers. The accused produced each tin at ₹1,300–₹ 1,400 and sold it for ₹3,500–₹ 4,000. The seizure helped prevent a major public health hazard during the festive season.

Ongoing Investigation

Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Food Safety and Standards Act. They are continuing to identify other units and trace the wider supply chain involved in the racket.
