1 in 30 Foods in MP Fail Safety Test: MP-FDA Cracks Down

Key Update

The Madhya Pradesh Food and Drugs Administration (MP-FDA) has expanded its scrutiny beyond medicines and, as a result, revealed that nearly one in every 30 food samples tested in the state was adulterated.

Between April 1 and September 30, food safety officers across Madhya Pradesh collected 9,827 legal samples and 12,214 surveillance samples. Subsequent laboratory analysis showed that 173 out of 5,262 legal samples failed to meet the quality and quantity claims printed on their packaging. Notably, authorities collect legal samples specifically to prosecute violations when they detect adulteration.

Strict Action and Penalties

Over the past six months, the MP-FDA imposed fines totalling around ₹36 lakh and revoked several food business licences, said senior food safety officer D.K. Verma. Furthermore, after laboratory tests confirm adulteration, the department files cases with the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) courts. The courts can then sentence offenders to up to six months in prison and impose fines of up to ₹10 lakh. In addition, during a recent review meeting, Commissioner Dinesh Shrivastava reaffirmed the department’s zero-tolerance policy on food adulteration and urged authorities to enforce stricter measures while ensuring greater accountability across the supply chain.

Rising Concerns Amid Toxic Syrup Cases

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh continues to grapple with toxic syrup incidents, which have prompted authorities to push for stronger food safety measures. Consequently, officials are also encouraging greater public vigilance to prevent further adulteration and protect consumer health.
