Key Update
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has instructed state authorities to treat consumer complaints as a top priority and conduct fortnightly reviews to ensure timely resolution. FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani said, “Resolving complaints promptly will boost consumer confidence and public awareness about food safety.”
Daily Enforcement Reporting and Accountability
To reinforce accountability, Punhani has directed states to submit daily reports on enforcement actions, detailing the measures taken against food businesses that violate safety norms. States must also optimise the use of advanced laboratory equipment and work toward NABL accreditation to ensure reliable and uniform food testing across the country.
Streamlining Licensing and Surveillance
Over 70 officials, including state commissioners, FSSAI representatives, and members from the food industry and research bodies, attended a meeting to discuss streamlining licensing and registration processes. The group emphasised data-driven decision-making and centralised surveillance, calling for coordinated action between FSSAI and states to generate credible, national-level food safety insights.
Targeting Adulterated Products Ahead of Festivals
FSSAI’s heightened oversight comes amid reports of adulterated food products ahead of the festive season across the country. In recent inspections, officials from the Food and Supply Department seized 26 samples of paneer and khoya, commonly used in sweets. Multiple challans were issued to food businesses for failing to meet food safety standards.
