India Tops Global Dairy Production with 25% Share

Key Development

India now produces 25% of the world’s milk, recording 230.58 million tonnes in 2022–23, a 58% increase since 2014–15. Top producers—Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh—account for over 53% of the total output of dairy. In 2023–24, India exported 63,738 MT of dairy products worth $272.64 million, reflecting its growing global presence.

Government Programs and Technological Boost

The government supports the dairy sector through Rashtriya Gokul Mission, NPDD, DEDS, and AHIDF, promoting improved cattle breeds, quality milk production, infrastructure, and rural entrepreneurship. IoT, AI, automation, and cold chains have enhanced productivity, milk quality, and efficiency across the supply chain.

Innovation Driving Value-Added Dairy Growth

Indian consumers increasingly demand health-focused and convenient products such as cheese, yoghurt, flavoured milk, and whey protein supplements. Innovations like HMO probiotics, shelf-stable yoghurt, and vegan cheese are expanding product variety and meeting modern lifestyles.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite global leadership, India faces low animal productivity, limited organised-sector processing (30%), adulteration, and hygiene gaps. Experts predict 20–30% growth in value-added products over the next five years, driven by domestic demand and global partnerships. India’s dairy industry, powered by technology, innovation, and policy support, continues to strengthen its global leadership and meet evolving consumer needs.
