Food Poisoning at Govt Minority School in Hyderabad: TGHRC Steps In

Key Development

The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken cognisance of a food poisoning incident at a government-run minority residential school in Bagh Lingampally, Hyderabad, where 16 students fell ill after consuming dinner. The incident occurred on December 11, when several students developed symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain. Authorities shifted the affected students to King Koti Government Hospital, where doctors admitted them for treatment.

Complaint Flags Lapses in Basic Facilities

The commission acted on a complaint filed by Rama Rao Immaneni, who alleged serious deficiencies in basic facilities at the school. The complaint highlighted the absence of safe drinking water, poor sanitation, and lapses in food safety and hygiene practices as contributing factors.

Commission Directs Detailed Enquiry

Taking serious note of the matter, the TGHRC directed the Commissioner and Director of Education, Government of Telangana, to conduct a detailed enquiry. The commission asked authorities to examine the circumstances leading to the food poisoning, assess existing food safety measures, and ensure that students receive safe and hygienic meals. The commission also instructed officials to fix responsibility and initiate appropriate action against those found negligent in maintaining hygiene and safety standards.

Recurring Food Safety Concerns in Residential Schools

The incident has once again drawn attention to repeated cases of food poisoning in government-run residential schools across Telangana, raising concerns over food quality, monitoring mechanisms, and the overall safety and well-being of students.
