Student Dies in Suspected Food Poisoning Case in Telangana

Key Update

A suspected food poisoning incident at a state government–run residential school in Telangana has claimed the life of another student on Thursday.

Sai Likhitha (14), a Class VIII student of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential School in Pochampad, Nizamabad district, fell critically ill on December 5 after consuming food served on the school premises. She was already suffering from jaundice, which aggravated her condition. Doctors treated her at a hospital in Hyderabad, where she later succumbed.

Multiple Students Fall Ill in Separate Incidents

Food poisoning cases in government-run schools continue to surface across the State. On December 12, nearly 60 students from two schools in Hyderabad fell ill after consuming food at their institutions. At the Government Primary School in Chandu Nayak Thanda, Madhapur, 44 students reported symptoms after eating the mid-day meal. In another incident, 16 students from the Telangana Minority Residential School in Bagh Lingampally fell ill after dinner.

Repeated Incidents Raise Safety Concerns

Such incidents highlight a recurring problem in government-run residential schools. Last year, Choudari Shailaja, a Class IX student of the Ashram School in Wankidi, died after battling for life for 25 days following a food poisoning episode. Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission had sought a report on the deaths of around 48 students and at least 886 cases of food poisoning reported in government-run residential schools across Telangana.
