Key Update
The Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department (TNFSDAD) will collect egg samples from 300 poultry farms in Namakkal district following allegations that eggs sold by a company contained cancer-causing chemicals.
Decision Taken After Consultative Meeting
Officials decided during a consultative meeting held on Wednesday between TNFSDAD officials and representatives of the Poultry Farmers Association. The meeting focused on addressing concerns and ensuring transparency in egg safety. Dr Thanga Vignesh, Designated Officer of TNFSDAD in Namakkal district, said eggs produced in and exported from Namakkal are free from harmful chemicals. He said the department will collect samples from all 300 poultry farms, send them for laboratory testing, and announce the results within a week. He added that the department will conduct similar testing across poultry farms throughout Tamil Nadu to maintain consumer confidence.
Industry Bodies Dismiss Adulteration Claims
Chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) K Singaraj rejected the allegations of egg adulteration, stating that no such issue has occurred in the history of egg production. He urged the public not to believe rumours and assured consumers that eggs are safe to consume.
