Key Update
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Mumbai ordered the immediate closure of VN Desai Hospital’s in-house canteen after inspectors found it operating with an expired licence and under unhygienic conditions. Managed by a private caterer for years, the canteen continued serving staff and patients’ relatives despite its Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence expiring on March 3, 2025.
Inspection Reveals Food Safety Lapses
The FDA found that the canteen was operating without a valid licence and violating food safety norms, prompting the authorities to order its immediate closure. An anonymous complaint had reported poor food quality and the presence of insects, which led to the inspection and strict enforcement action.
Former Staff Corroborate Issues
A former hospital employee said the problems had persisted for a long time. Ongoing renovation work worsened conditions, as the kitchen lacked proper coverings, allowing dust and debris to fall into the food. A senior staffer added that the hospital administration also bore responsibility, citing inadequate supervision and perfunctory inspections. Attempts to reach the administration for comment went unanswered.
