Key Update
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted enforcement drives across multiple states last week and uncovered cases of food adulteration, poor hygiene, and regulatory violations. On 6 January 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Department, along with Mohanpur Police, seized 7,210 kg of adulterated ghee in Kasganj. The authorities valued the seized stock at around ₹14.5 lakh, arrested two individuals, and registered an FIR.
On 9 January, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in Jhansi carried out late-night inspections at the Jhansi Festival fair using Dome-24 technology. Officials detected rancid cooking oil at several food stalls and removed it immediately to prevent health risks.
Goa Inspections Flag Hygiene and Licensing Lapses
On 11 January, the Goa Food Safety Department inspected food establishments in Ponda taluka to check hygiene standards and licensing compliance. Officials fined four food business operators a total of ₹8,000 for ignoring earlier Section 31 notices and continuing to operate in insanitary conditions without valid FSSAI registrations.
Penalties Issued for Repeated Non-Compliance
During the same drive, officials penalised two establishments under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, for failing to display mandatory ‘No Smoking’ signage. Authorities also issued fresh notices to three other premises, directing them to comply with prescribed safety standards within a stipulated timeframe.
