Key Development
At least 30 residents of Sector Delta 1 in Greater Noida reported loose motions and stomach pain after drinking water suspected to be contaminated over three days. The incident has raised food safety concerns, as unsafe water directly affects cooking, drinking and kitchen hygiene, especially in homes with children.
Health Officials Flag Possible Waterborne Infection
The health department examined around 30 residents, including children, at a medical camp set up in the area. Several patients reported stomach-related symptoms, and doctors observed a possible link to contaminated water. Symptoms were described as mild, but officials planned continued monitoring as a precaution.
GNIDA Inspects Pipelines, Tests Water
Following complaints, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority inspected the area, repaired leaking pipelines and tested the water supply. Officials identified faults at two locations and carried out immediate repairs. GNIDA said it found no confirmed evidence of sewage contamination so far and has sent water samples for laboratory analysis. The authority has also ordered random water quality testing across Greater Noida.
Ageing Pipes Identified as Risk
GNIDA announced plans to replace old galvanised iron pipes with plastic pipelines, particularly those connecting residential areas to the main supply. Officials said corrosion in ageing pipes can cause leaks, allowing mud or contaminants to enter the water and change its colour.
Advisory Issued for Residents
To reduce contamination risks, GNIDA advised residents not to switch on water motors during periods of no supply, as empty pipelines are more vulnerable to seepage during leaks.
Why Water Safety Matters for Food
Experts stressed that contaminated water can carry harmful bacteria such as E. coli and amoeba, which pose serious food safety risks when used for cooking or washing utensils. They advised households to boil water or use chlorine tablets until test results confirm the supply is safe.
