MP Mustard Adulteration Scam: Clay Found in MSP Stock

Key Development

A routine check by NAFED revealed large-scale mustard adulteration in Madhya Pradesh after a buyer flagged poor quality during lifting. Granules sold as mustard dissolved in water, confirming they were clay. Nearly 40% of the mustard procured under the MSP (Minimum Support Price) scheme in Sagar district was fake. Inspections by NAFED, in the presence of warehouse and cooperative officials, confirmed that the granules resembled mustard but were clay.

FIR Filed, Officials Booked

NAFED filed an FIR on January 17. Five officials—including cooperative society managers, surveyors, and the branch manager of the state warehousing corporation—were booked for cheating, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Traceability Lapses Raise Health Concerns

NAFED had procured 8,950 quintals of mustard during the 2024–25 rabi season at ₹2,650 per quintal. Around 300 quintals remained in storage. Investigators flagged missing farmer identification codes on gunny bags, weakening traceability. Officials said the case exposes gaps in quality control and poses a direct public health risk.
