Attukal Pongala 2026: Food Safety Gets Top Priority

Key Update

Ahead of the Attukal Pongala festival on March 3, the Food Safety Department has issued strict guidelines to ensure hygienic and safe food practices during the celebrations.

Mandatory Compliance for Food Businesses

The department has instructed all food establishments linked to the festival to follow food safety standards rigorously. Operators must prominently display a valid food safety licence or registration certificate at their premises. During inspections, they must also present medical fitness certificates for all employees and water quality test reports if water is used in cooking or food preparation. To strengthen food safety practices, the department will hold a mandatory awareness session on Thursday for all food business operators and cooking staff within the festival zone. Participation is compulsory, and food entrepreneurs must register in advance via email to attend.

Registration Required for Free Food Distribution

Institutions, organisations, and individuals planning to distribute free meals, snacks, soft drinks, or drinking water must complete prior registration with the department. Registration is available at Akshaya centres, where applicants must submit address proof of the person responsible for distribution and pay the prescribed fee online. The department encourages the public to report any food safety concerns by calling the toll-free helpline at 1800 425 1126.
