Key Update
A 33-year-old man from Cheppanam in Ernakulam died after reportedly suffering a severe allergic reaction following the consumption of crab curry, drawing attention to the risks associated with food allergies.
The deceased, Elgin Judah. 33 years, Kurikkal House, had eaten crab curry prepared at home on Saturday night. Shortly after consuming the meal, he reportedly felt unwell and was rushed to a private hospital in Nettoor. Doctors admitted him to the intensive care unit, where he died on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment. Family members said he had previously experienced an allergic reaction after consuming crab and had since avoided eating it. However, he reportedly consumed crab again after a long gap.
Shellfish Allergies Can Be Severe
Health experts say shellfish allergies—particularly to crab, prawns, and lobster—are among the most common food allergies and can trigger severe reactions in sensitive individuals. Symptoms may include itching, swelling, breathing difficulty, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. In serious cases, the reaction can progress to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
Importance of Food Allergy Awareness
Food safety experts stress that individuals with known food allergies should strictly avoid the trigger food, as even small quantities can cause severe reactions. Unlike food poisoning, allergic reactions occur when the immune system reacts to specific proteins in food. Doctors advise people with food allergies to remain cautious about what they consume and to seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear after eating.
Authorities said the body will be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. The incident highlights the importance of awareness and caution when dealing with known food allergies.
