Andhra Health Minister Warns Adulterators, Urges Citizens to Stay Alert

Key Update

Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has urged citizens to speak up against food adulteration, stressing that public vigilance and strong government action are both necessary to curb the growing menace. Responding to questions in the State Assembly, the Minister said the government is working with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to introduce stricter enforcement measures. He said the aim is to create a strong deterrent and instil fear among those involved in food adulteration.

Steps to Strengthen Food Safety Inspections

The Minister said the government is taking steps to strengthen the food safety inspection system to protect public health better. To achieve this, authorities are strengthening the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) by conducting surprise inspections, improving the system for collecting food samples, and enhancing laboratory testing facilities.

Thousands of Food Samples Tested

Officials tested 16,730 food samples across the State between 2023–24 and January 2026. Out of these, 1,407 samples were found to be unsafe or of poor quality. Authorities have initiated legal action against violators, including fines and prosecutions. The Minister pointed out that the current law allows a maximum imprisonment of only six months for selling unsafe food. He described the punishment as inadequate and said discussions are underway with FSSAI to introduce stricter penalties.

Warning Against Synthetic Colours

Referring to recent inspections in Guntur, Vijayawada, and Rajamahendravaram, Yadav warned food vendors against using synthetic colours in items such as chilli chicken and jaggery. He cautioned that these substances can pose serious health risks, including cancer. The government has also intensified awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of adulterated food. Authorities are spreading the message through hoardings, posters, and public outreach programmes across the State.
