85 Fall Ill After Consuming Buckwheat Flour During Fasting in Uttar Pradesh

Significant Update

Nearly 85 people, including an additional district magistrate, fell ill after consuming kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour), typically eaten during fasting rituals, in Baghpat, Bijnor and Bulandshahr districts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said. All affected individuals were hospitalised and are now recovering. In Bulandshahr, 39 people fell ill after consuming buckwheat flour in different parts of the district. Authorities admitted them to the district hospital, where doctors said their condition is improving.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dinesh Chandra said devotees usually consume falahaar—grain-free meals prepared with buckwheat flour—during fasting. Officials have collected samples of the flour for testing and will take action based on the results.

ADM Among Those Affected in Baghpat

In Baghpat, more than 18 people, including Additional District Magistrate (Judicial) Shiv Narayan Singh, suffered suspected food poisoning after eating dishes made with buckwheat flour. They experienced symptoms such as vomiting and restlessness and were taken to a hospital. Several others from nearby villages also required medical treatment after consuming buckwheat-based food.

Around 30 Fall Ill in Bijnor

In Bijnor, about 30 people developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming buckwheat flour. Chief Medical Officer Dr Kaushlendra Singh said most patients were admitted to Samipur Hospital in Najibabad, while some sought treatment at private hospitals. Officials said the situation is now under control.

Investigation Underway

Food safety and health departments have launched a joint probe. Officials are collecting samples from shops that sold the flour to trace the source of contamination. Deputy Commissioner of the Food Safety Department D. P. Singh said authorities will take strict action against any shop found selling adulterated buckwheat flour. Officials have also advised people to buy reliable and properly packaged food products.
