Odisha School Food Poisoning: 1 Dead, 100+ Students Fall Ill; Probe Underway

Key Update

More than 100 students fell ill, and a Class 5 student died after consuming a meal at a government-run tribal residential school in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. Following the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered a probe, while Revenue Divisional Commissioner Sudhanshu Samal launched an inquiry.

Students Fall Ill After Consuming Suspected Contaminated Food

Students of the Kakabandha Ashram School in Rasgovindpur reported diarrhoea and vomiting after consuming food at the hostel on Sunday (April 12, 2026). Officials said the students ate items not listed in the authorised menu. Parents alleged that the children were served ‘pakhala’ (fermented rice), ‘saga bhaja’ (fried greens), ‘aloo bharta’ (mashed potatoes), and mango chutney. Reports suggest the food may have been stale and prepared the previous day.

One Student Dies, Over 100 Affected

A Class 5 student, Rupali Besra (12), died on Tuesday (April 14, 2026), two days after the incident. In total, around 148 students reported symptoms, prompting immediate medical attention. RDC Sudhanshu Samal visited the Rasgovindpur Community Health Centre and Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital, where he interacted with affected students and their families. He also inspected the school premises, including the kitchen, and reviewed food preparation and drinking water arrangements.

Dozens Under Treatment, Some Discharged

Officials said nearly 60 students continue to receive treatment at the PRM hospital. One student has been shifted to Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack, while another remains in the ICU but is reportedly improving. At least 12 students have been discharged after recovery. Authorities are investigating possible lapses in food preparation, storage, and adherence to the approved menu. The incident has raised serious concerns about food safety practices in residential schools.
