Illegal PDS Rice Seizure in Mangaluru Raises Food Safety Concerns

Illegal PDS Rice Seizure in Mangaluru Raises Food Safety Concerns

Key Update

A food inspector intercepted a pickup vehicle carrying illegally procured Public Distribution System (PDS) rice in Mangaluru, highlighting risks to food safety and traceability. Inspector Prasanna Kumar Pakkala acted on a tip-off about the unauthorised diversion of subsidised rice meant for public welfare.

Lack of Traceability and Documentation

Officials tracked and stopped the vehicle near Old Airport Road with police support. During inspection, they found multiple sacks of rice sourced from different outlets. The driver failed to produce purchase bills, raising serious concerns about traceability, storage conditions, and regulatory compliance —key pillars of food safety. Diverted PDS rice often bypasses regulated channels and may undergo unsafe handling, repackaging, or processing. In this case, the accused planned to transport the rice for resale, which could expose consumers to compromised quality and potential contamination.

Need for Stronger Monitoring

The incident underlines the importance of strict monitoring of food distribution systems. Ensuring that food meant for public consumption remains within regulated supply chains is essential to prevent misuse, maintain quality, and protect consumer health. Authorities identified three accused and registered a case at the Bajpe police station. Further investigation is underway.
