Unsafe Meals, Unsafe Living: Food Safety Concerns at LHMC, Delhi

Significant Update

Students at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in New Delhi have raised serious concerns about food safety in the hostel mess. They report repeated instances of meals containing insects and larvae, pointing to poor hygiene and unsafe food handling practices. Many students say they realised the contamination only after eating, and some have fallen ill. Despite repeated complaints, authorities have not made visible improvements, raising concerns about gaps in inspection, pest control, and sanitation.

Hygiene Gaps and Rising Risks

Students have also highlighted poor sanitation across the hostel, including waterlogging and improper waste management. These conditions encourage pest activity, which can directly affect food safety if not controlled. The frequent presence of stray dogs inside hostel premises further reflects weak environmental hygiene control, especially in areas close to food consumption.

The situation worsens during summer, when high temperatures and poor ventilation speed up food spoilage and bacterial growth. Without proper storage and cooling, the risk of contamination increases significantly.

Delays and Need for Action

Students have demanded a change in the mess contractor, but pending dues have delayed the process. Many had previously stopped using the mess due to poor food quality, which has further complicated the issue. The administration has said it is reviewing the matter, while the Federation of All India Medical Association has extended support to the students and called for immediate action.

This situation highlights the need for strict food safety practices in institutional settings. Authorities must ensure proper hygiene, regular inspections, effective pest control, and timely response to complaints to protect student health.
