Woman Claims ‘Chemical-Free’ Mangoes Worth ₹1,800 Turned Tasteless Inside

Significant Update

A social media post about allegedly poor-quality “chemical-free” mangoes has sparked discussions online about food quality, artificial ripening, and misleading marketing claims during the summer fruit season.

The incident came to light after a woman shared her experience of purchasing 10 kg of mangoes for ₹1,800 from a vendor who claimed the fruits were completely chemical-free and farm fresh. According to the post, the mangoes appeared fully ripened from the outside but turned out pale and tasteless when cut open.

The woman alleged that most of the mangoes looked attractive externally but lacked proper ripening and flavour internally. She also claimed that the vendor immediately refunded the money without questioning the complaint, further raising her suspicion about the quality of the fruits.

Debate Over Artificial Ripening and Premium Pricing

The viral post triggered reactions from several social media users, many of whom expressed concerns over the growing use of terms such as “organic” and “chemical-free” to sell fruits at premium prices.

Some users alleged that traders often use artificial ripening methods and misleading labels to attract customers during mango season. Others pointed out that early harvesting and improper ripening practices can also result in fruits remaining white and tasteless inside, even if they appear ripe externally.

Consumers also shared tips online, advising buyers to test smaller quantities before purchasing large batches of expensive fruits.

Food Safety Concerns During Mango Season

Food safety experts have repeatedly warned against the use of unsafe ripening agents such as calcium carbide, a chemical banned in India for fruit ripening due to potential health risks. Consumption of chemically ripened fruits may cause irritation, digestive discomfort, and other health concerns. Authorities generally recommend purchasing fruits from reliable vendors and checking for natural aroma, texture, and uniform ripening instead of relying solely on labels such as “organic” or “chemical-free.”

The incident has once again highlighted growing consumer concerns over transparency, food quality, and food safety in the seasonal fruit market.
