FSSAI Acts on Viral Food Complaints: Nestle Maggi, KFC, Open Secret Under Lens

Significant Update

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its monitoring of consumer complaints shared on social media. In response to multiple viral posts alleging hygiene lapses and possible contamination, the regulator has issued notices to several food business operators, including Nestlé India, a KFC outlet in Andhra Pradesh, snack brand Open Secret, and Flipkart India.

As a result, FSSAI has initiated preliminary inquiries after these online complaints gained traction and raised food safety concerns. Furthermore, the regulator has sought detailed Action Taken Reports (ATRs) along with supporting documentation from the companies involved.

Nestlé India Faces Notice Over Maggi Complaint

FSSAI issued a notice to Nestlé India after a social media allegation claimed insects or larvae in a Maggi noodles packet. The regulator sought batch details, vendor information, internal quality control records, supply chain checks, and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Nestlé India denied the allegations, stating that an unverified social media post triggered the complaint and that no sample was provided for testing. The company said it submitted quality records and test reports to the authorities and maintained that internal and market samples showed no evidence of infestation.

Hygiene Concerns Raised at KFC Outlet in Eluru

FSSAI also issued a notice to a KFC outlet located at MVR Mall in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, after allegations of unhygienic conditions surfaced online. The regulator sought details on sanitation practices, food handling procedures, storage systems, waste management, pest control measures, and employee hygiene standards, along with evidence of corrective actions taken.

Devyani International, which operates the outlet, stated that it will investigate the allegations and respond to the regulator. Sapphire Foods clarified that Devyani International operates the Eluru outlet.

Open Secret and Flipkart Under Scrutiny

A third notice was issued to Open Secret and Flipkart after consumers alleged insect contamination in “Un-junked Dates” ordered via Flipkart’s quick-commerce service. FSSAI has sought internal quality control records, product batch details, and documentation of any recall or corrective action taken, along with preventive measures to avoid similar incidents. Neither Flipkart nor Open Secret has issued a public response so far.

FSSAI Calls It a Fact-Finding Exercise

FSSAI clarified that these notices are part of a preliminary fact-finding process and do not establish any wrongdoing. The regulator has directed all companies to submit detailed responses along with supporting evidence before any further action is taken.

The development reflects FSSAI’s growing focus on social media-driven complaints and its effort to strengthen accountability, transparency, and food safety compliance across the supply chain.
