Cleaner Streets, Safer Food: Kerala Plans Food Vending Zones

Cleaner Streets, Safer Food: Kerala Plans Food Vending Zones

Key Update

The Kerala Food Safety Department has proposed establishing dedicated Food Vending Zones for street food vendors in municipal corporations and municipalities across the state. The department will soon send a communication to local self-government institutions seeking their cooperation in identifying and developing suitable locations.

Basic Facilities to Be Provided

With financial assistance from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the Food Safety Department plans to equip these zones with essential infrastructure. The proposed facilities include seating arrangements, street lighting, waste bins, clean drinking water, and water pipeline connections. Officials believe that providing common infrastructure will help vendors operate in safer and more hygienic conditions while improving the overall experience for customers.

Focus on Hygiene and Standardisation

The department has launched the initiative to address unhygienic conditions often seen in roadside food stalls. Authorities also plan to introduce a uniform design for street food stalls within these designated zones, creating a cleaner and more organized environment for both vendors and consumers.

Kozhikode Street Food Hub Serves as a Model

Officials have identified the Modern Street Food Hub at Kozhikode Beach as a model for the proposed project. The hub was developed with FSSAI funding and support from the municipal corporation and has demonstrated how dedicated vending zones can improve hygiene, infrastructure, and customer convenience. The department expects similar projects across urban local bodies to strengthen food safety standards while supporting the growth of the street food sector.
