Buy Onam Food Only from Registered Sellers

The Food Safety Department in Kerala has urged the public to buy food prepared for Onam celebrations only from registered food businesses. It has also issued guidelines on safe packaging, food handling and preparation.

Check Labels and Packaging

Food businesses must clearly display the packing date and time on food packets, along with the mandatory warning to consume the food within two hours. They must pack instant payasam and similar products only in food-grade containers. The use of low-quality plastic containers is prohibited.

Ensure Safe Water and Food Handling

Food businesses must test the water they use for cooking, washing utensils and other activities through laboratory testing to ensure its safety. They must also arrange medical examinations for food handlers and obtain medical fitness certificates. The department has prohibited the use of unauthorised artificial colours and the repeated reuse of cooking oil.

Action Against Violations

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, authorities will take legal action against businesses that store, distribute or sell packaged food without complete labels and required information. Consumers can report food safety complaints through the toll-free number 1800 425 1125.
