Key Update
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health authorities are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli O145 infections linked to organic frozen blueberries. The latest FDA update reports 12 illnesses and four hospitalisations in Florida and Georgia. Authorities have reported no deaths.
Investigators identified GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries among the products linked to the investigation. On July 29, 2026, Publix recalled all lots of the affected products after an earlier recall involving a specific lot of frozen blueberries supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a company based in Chile.
Publix distributed the recalled products through its stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The FDA has also placed products from the Chilean supplier under an import alert as authorities investigate the source and extent of the contamination.
What Consumers Should Know
Consumers should not eat, sell or serve the recalled products. Anyone who has purchased the affected berries should discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Consumers should also clean and sanitise any surfaces or containers that came into contact with the recalled products to prevent cross-contamination.
E. coli O145 produces Shiga toxin and can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and, in some cases, serious complications such as haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The FDA continues to investigate the outbreak and trace the source of the contamination. Authorities may issue additional recalls as the investigation progresses.
