Significant Update
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licence of Seven Seas Hospitality with immediate effect after inspectors found serious food safety violations at its premises. The New Delhi-based hospitality and event management company operates the Seven Seas Hotel in Rohini and provides luxury banqueting and catering services.
FSSAI announced the action in a social media post on Wednesday, saying its inspection team found “serious non-compliances” at the food premises. The regulator has also directed the company to stop all food business activities during the suspension period.
Inspectors Find Poor Hygiene and Spoiled Food
Inspectors found poor hygiene and sanitation in the food preparation areas, including water stagnation, foul odour, filth and inadequate housekeeping. They also found deteriorated food materials with fungal growth on tomatoes, papaya, jaggery and cashew nuts. Rotten capsicums and blackened, degraded cooking oil were also among the items found during the inspection.
Food Storage Practices Raise Concerns
The inspection team also identified serious food storage problems. Workers failed to adequately segregate meat and vegetarian food, while inspectors observed improper meat storage. The team also found condensation dripping from cold storage units onto food items, creating a potential contamination risk.
Pest Control and Infrastructure Lapses
FSSAI inspectors identified several infrastructure and pest-control problems, including refrigeration leakage, excessive ice deposition, flaking plaster, inadequate cold storage, poor ventilation and insufficient lighting. They also found cockroaches and house flies on the premises. The inspection further revealed lapses in sanitation, record maintenance and water testing. FSSAI said the company destroyed approximately 74 kg/litres of non-compliant food articles on-site. The food business operator (FBO) scored only 30% in the compliance assessment, which the regulator classified as “non-compliance.”
FSSAI Intensifies Enforcement
The action comes as FSSAI and state food safety authorities step up inspections of hotels, restaurants and other food businesses across cities. Authorities have taken action against several establishments over serious hygiene lapses and food safety violations. Recently, FSSAI also initiated penal action against e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, Flipkart India and Zepto, over various non-compliances, including misleading claims and the sale of prohibited products.
