On Saturday, the Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand, food safety department seized adulterated sweets and chickpeas from temporary stalls at the ongoing Jagannathpur Rath Mela. Ranchi food safety officer Subir Ranjan, who led the inspection team, said on Sunday that they tested the quality of sweets and other foods being sold at the fair. The team used a mobile food testing lab to collect and test 96 samples directly on-site.
Non-Edible Colours Found in Sweets and Chickpeas
Inspectors discovered 24 kilograms of sweets in one shop prepared with non-edible food colours and identified seven kilograms of chickpeas from three chaat stalls contaminated with banned colouring agents. The team immediately destroyed all the adulterated food items to protect consumers. They served notices to the sweet makers from Purulia, West Bengal, and ordered them to comply strictly with food safety regulations.
Food Safety Guidelines Planned for Stall Owners
Ranjan stated that the department will soon introduce clear guidelines for temporary stall owners who travel from other states to join the Jagannathpur Rath Mela fair each year, to ensure they follow proper food safety standards.
