Key Update
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised several Indian Standards for determining vitamin content in foods, marking a major step toward improving accuracy and reliability in nutrient testing. The updated standards cover Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid), Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D—key micronutrients vital for public health.
From Outdated to Advanced Methods
Earlier standards, developed nearly five decades ago, relied on microbiological and colorimetric assays that were slow, expensive, and less precise. These have now been replaced with advanced chromatographic techniques such as HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) and LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry). These modern techniques ensure higher sensitivity, precision, and reliability—aligning India’s testing framework with global best practices.
Collaborative R&D for Validation
The updated methods are the outcome of a collaborative Research and Development (R&D) project led by the CSIR–Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru, in partnership with five accredited laboratories:
- Nestlé India Limited Laboratory Services, Moga
- Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane
- Eureka Analytical Services Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru
- Eurofins Analytical Services India Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru
- Microchem Silliker Pvt. Ltd., Navi Mumbai
The validation process ensured that the revised methods meet Standard Method Performance Requirements (SMPR) and are suitable for a wide range of food matrices, including aqueous, fatty, and fibrous foods.
Strengthening Food Fortification and Safety
Accurate vitamin analysis is crucial for monitoring fortified foods such as milk, cereals, and juices. The updated BIS standards will help verify declared nutrient levels, ensure regulatory compliance, and enhance consumer trust in packaged foods. By adopting these advanced testing methods, India moves closer to a more transparent, science-driven food safety system that supports both public health and industry integrity.
