CSIR-CFTRI Unveils Eco-Friendly Biodegradable Plates and Edible Utensils

Report

As part of the CSIR initiative “SHREE ANNA – the Millet Mission,” the Biodegradable Cutlery Research and Innovation Centre at the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru has created biodegradable plates to reduce plastic waste. With this initiative, CSIR-CFTRI addresses environmental issues caused by plastic waste, utilizing millet processing by-products and waste. The centre houses the production, pre-processing, and analytical equipment needed to manufacture biodegradable dinnerware and cutlery.

Plate Trial and Foundation Day Celebration

CFTRI served high tea to guests on the new biodegradable plates during its 75th Foundation Day celebrations. Researchers are also developing edible utensils so that consumers can enjoy their meals and then eat the utensils themselves.

The Project’s Creative Team

Senior Principal Scientist Ashitosh A. Inamdar oversees the project, with support from Saravanan M. and Suresh D. Sakhare of CFTRI’s flour milling, baking, and confectionery technologies department.

Technologies Released

CFTRI also introduced other innovations, including ethylene scavenger technology, a multigrain waffle process, gluten-free bread premix, probiotic carrot nectar, and instant masala chai premix.
