FDA Issues Class I Recall for Chocolate Spread Over Salmonella Risk

Report

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall after tests confirmed Salmonella contamination in a chocolate spread. Turkish company Emek Gıda produced the spread, which gained TikTok fame in 2024 for its creamy pistachio and kadayıf filling. This recalled batch is one of several versions launched after Dubai-based Fix Dessert Chocolatier introduced the original trend.

Which Products Are Affected

World Market stores sold the affected chocolate spread in 32 U.S. states from June 11 to July 9, 2025. The recalled jars display batch code 250401 on the lid and a best-before date of April 1, 2027. The FDA upgraded the recall to Class I on July 17 after its tests found Salmonella in three of 24 jars during routine checks. Emek Gıda confirmed that the issue affects only this batch sent to the U.S. and started reviewing its production, storage, and shipping processes to locate the contamination source.

Health Risks and Company Response

Salmonella infections can severely affect infants, older adults, and people with weak immune systems. Even healthy individuals can experience fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can spread to the bloodstream, causing life-threatening complications. Emek Gıda launched a full audit of its supply chain after suspecting contamination during production, storage, or transport. The FDA confirmed the recall after its safety checks detected Salmonella in the U.S. warehouse.

What You Should Do Now

The FDA urges consumers to avoid eating the recalled chocolate spread. Return it to the store for a refund or dispose of it safely. FDA and Emek Gıda continue to monitor the situation and will share updates if more contaminated products appear or illnesses occur.
