FDA Shuts Down Zepto’s Dharavi Hub Over Food Safety Violations

Report

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food business license of Quick-commerce company Zepto at its Dharavi, Mumbai location after uncovering serious food safety violations. Following a tip-off from Minister of State for FDA Yogen Kadam, inspectors conducted a surprise inspection at the facility. During their visit, they found fungal contamination on food items and noted that cold storage units failed to maintain proper temperatures. Additionally, expired and fresh stock were stored together, and some food was placed directly on the floor. Inspectors also observed wet, dirty floors and food stored near clogged, stagnant water.

Regulatory Breach Triggers Immediate Suspension

The FDA identified Kiranakart Technologies, Zepto’s operator, as violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with the Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses Regulations, 2011. Consequently, Assistant Commissioner (Food) Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil ordered the immediate suspension of Zepto’s license under Section 32(3) of the Act and Regulation 2.1.8(4) of the Licensing Regulations. The FDA confirmed that it will keep the suspension in place until the facility fully complies with regulatory standards and receives clearance from the licensing authority.

Zepto Commits to Swift Compliance

In a statement to Business Standard, a Zepto spokesperson emphasised the company’s commitment to food safety and hygiene. They have launched an internal review and are working closely with authorities to ensure timely compliance. Moreover, Zepto is actively addressing the issues found and improving its operational standards to provide safe, high-quality products. The company assured it is taking all necessary corrective steps to resume operations in full accordance with relevant laws and regulations as soon as possible.
