Food Safety Department Probes Student’s Illness Linked to Soft Drink in Idukki

Key Update

The Food Safety Department launched an investigation after a Plus One student from St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Peruvanthanam, reportedly fell ill after consuming a soft drink in Idukki. The student, Martin, started vomiting and developed diarrhoea soon after drinking the beverage. Doctors first admitted him to Peerumedu Taluk Hospital and later shifted him to Kottayam Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Father Files Complaint Over Unsafe Drink

Martin’s father, Parakkunnel Sinu Joseph, complained to the Food Safety Officer that his son fell ill after drinking a soft drink bought from a shop in Cheruvallikkulam. Acting on the complaint, officials inspected the shop but failed to find a sample of the drink his son had consumed.

Factory Under Food Safety Scanner

Food Safety Officer M. Mithun said a factory in Idavetti, Thodupuzha, manufactured the drink. The Thodupuzha Food Safety Office has started inspecting the factory to verify safety compliance and identify possible lapses. Officials are tracing the contamination source and testing other batches for safety. The Idukki food safety department has vowed to take strict action if it confirms any violations.
