Unsafe Packaging Practices Highlighted
The Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Saturday emphasized the dangers of using non-food grade materials for packing food. Small eateries, including roadside vendors like ‘thattukadas’, commonly use newspapers to wrap food. This practice allows harmful chemicals such as lead and dyes to mix with the food, posing serious health risks. Additionally, the use of such materials can spread airborne microorganisms, further compromising food safety.
Ban on Newspaper Use for Food Preparation
The official strongly advised against using newspapers even to absorb excess oil from snacks. This practice not only risks chemical contamination but also violates basic food safety standards.
Call for Safe Packaging Alternatives
Eateries and food vendors must adopt safer methods for packing and storing food. The Assistant Commissioner stressed that businesses should strictly follow food safety guidelines and use only food-grade containers to ensure the safety of consumers.
Focus on Consumer Safety
The issued guidelines aim to protect public health by eliminating harmful packaging practices and promoting the use of safe, compliant materials. Food businesses are urged to take these measures seriously to prevent avoidable health hazards.
