FSSAI and Legal Metrology Launch Joint Raids in Vijayawada’s Eateries

Key Update

Officials from the Legal Metrology Department and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched joint raids across the eateries in Vijayawada on Tuesday (August 19). They inspected hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and sweet shops to crack down on food safety violations. The inspection teams seized stale food, expired stock, and frozen items from several establishments. FSSAI Joint Food Controller N. Purchandra Rao said the department deployed nearly 20 teams to conduct checks in areas such as Benz Circle, Patamata, Satyanarayanapuram, and M.G. Road.

Officers Check Weights and Packaging Rules

Legal Metrology officers checked sweet shops and eateries for compliance with weights and packaging norms. “We verified weighing machines and examined whether packets displayed correct details like MRP, manufacturer’s name, contact number, and manufacturing and expiry dates,” said Joint Controller A. Krishna Chaitanya. Deputy Controller Hari Prasad said the teams focused on shops in busy commercial areas to prevent malpractice and protect consumer rights.

Inspectors Send Food Samples for Testing

Food Safety inspectors collected raw materials, packaged items, and frozen products from the outlets. They have sent the samples to laboratories for further testing. Officials confirmed that they will continue such inspections in the coming weeks to enforce food safety standards in Vijayawada.
