FSSAI Cracks Down on False Food Returns

Report

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reminded all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to submit their annual returns with complete accuracy. It warned that authorities will impose strict penalties on those who provide false or misleading information. In a recent post on X, FSSAI stressed that complying with these requirements is crucial to maintaining a safe food ecosystem. Earlier this month, the authority alerted food safety units across all states to strictly follow these compliance measures.

Online FoSCoS Platform Boosts Compliance

Since December 2020, FSSAI has required FBOs to file their annual returns for the 2020-21 financial year onward exclusively through the online FoSCoS platform. This change has significantly improved submission rates, according to FSSAI’s communication with state and UT authorities.

Revision Facility Available for Corrections

The annual returns collect essential data, including mandatory production details and non-mandatory compliance information. Licensing authorities must carefully review the annual returns submitted by FBOs under their jurisdiction to verify their accuracy. Since January 2024, FSSAI has added a feature on the FoSCoS platform that allows FBOs to revise or update their annual returns to correct inadvertent mistakes.

Authorities Urge Timely and Truthful Filings

In its July 7 communication, FSSAI reminded all eligible FBOs that submitting accurate and complete information is mandatory. It urged FBOs to promptly use the revision facility if corrections are needed, following the specified timelines and fee structure. The order also reiterated that providing false or misleading information will attract penalties under Section 61 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI emphasised that timely corrections are essential to avoid punitive action.
