Key Development
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all food outlets—including restaurants, cafés, dhabas, and eateries—to prominently display a QR code linked to its existing Food Safety Connect mobile app. This new requirement, issued on 25 July, aims to boost consumer engagement and make it easier for the public to report hygiene and safety concerns.
Customers Can Now Scan and Act
FSSAI has asked food business operators (FBOs) to place the QR code at key locations like entrances or billing counters. When scanned, the code opens the Food Safety Connect app, allowing customers to instantly file complaints, access food safety information, and report misleading claims.
App Features Empower the Public
The app, already available for download, offers several functions:
- Report food safety and hygiene violations
- Flag false or misleading food labels
- Access the licensing status of food outlets
- Stay informed on food safety alerts and initiatives
FSSAI wants to encourage everyday diners to take part in monitoring food standards.
FBOs Must Ensure Visibility and Participation
Rakesh Kumar, Director of Regulatory Compliance at FSSAI, urged food outlets to actively promote the app. He asked FBOs to display the QR codes clearly and encourage customers to use the app during their visit. FSSAI has already shared these QR codes with businesses across the country. By mandating QR code visibility, FSSAI strengthens consumer involvement in food safety monitoring. The move signals a shift toward more open, responsive regulation, where the public plays a key role in ensuring hygiene and accountability.
