The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged States and Union Territories to ramp up efforts to combat obesity and cut down edible oil consumption by 10%. During the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on May 27 in New Delhi, FSSAI officials emphasised the urgency of tackling these growing public health issues. FSSAI called on local governments to lead robust public awareness campaigns and take decisive action aimed at creating a healthier, obesity-free India. It directed States and UTs to implement public health initiatives at the ground level actively.

Schools to Install ‘Sugar Boards’

Highlighting the importance of healthy food habits in children, the FSSAI supported the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)’s directive, which asked schools to set up ‘sugar boards’. This initiative seeks to reduce sugar consumption among students and instil better dietary practices early in life.

States and UTs to Boost ‘Eat Right India’ and Improve Food Access

FSSAI asked States and UTs to strengthen food safety surveillance and expand the reach of the ‘Eat Right India’ campaign. It urged local authorities to ensure safe, nutritious food reaches all segments of society and offered technical assistance to support these efforts. Over 60 members participated in the 47th CAC meeting, including Food Safety Commissioners from States and UTs, central ministry officials, and representatives from agriculture, the food industry, consumer groups, research organisations, and laboratories.

Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Fruit Ripening

FSSAI instructed enforcement teams to intensify inspections in fruit markets and storage areas to prevent the illegal use of calcium carbide (commonly referred to as ‘masala’) and synthetic ripening agents or coatings. It directed officials to take strict action against anyone violating food safety norms.
