GCDA’s Food Street: Kochi’s New Culinary Hotspot

Report

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is finalizing the construction of a food street in Kasturba Nagar, near Panampilly Nagar In Kochi as part of the central government’s ‘Modernisation of 100 Food Streets’ initiative. This project aims to improve food safety, enhance food quality, and encourage healthier eating habits while offering a range of global cuisines.

Facilities and Attractions for Food Lovers

Once completed, the food street will draw food enthusiasts from across the region and create numerous local employment opportunities. It will feature 20 food outlets, sufficient seating arrangements, modern lighting, clean restrooms, a solid-liquid waste management system, ample parking, and spaces for entertainment activities, according to a GCDA official. GCDA expects to complete the project by February. The food street forms part of a broader city beautification effort that includes constructing a scenic walkway and a recreational centre in Kasturba Nagar, further enhancing the area’s appeal.

Collaborative Effort and Future Expansion Plans

The project is being executed through collaboration between the GCDA, Kochi Municipal Corporation, National Health Mission, and the state food safety department, with financial support from the central government. If successful, GCDA plans to replicate the food street concept in other areas of Kochi.
