Report
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) food safety officers carried out surprise inspections at 75 hospital kitchens across Hyderabad on Tuesday. They collected 14 food samples and sent them to the State Food Laboratory in Nacharam for detailed analysis. Acting on instructions from the GHMC Commissioner, food safety officers began unannounced inspections of hospital kitchens within their respective circles. During these visits, they directed hospital managements to strictly adhere to hygiene standards while preparing and supplying food and maintaining overall kitchen cleanliness.
Common Violations Noticed During Inspections
The inspection teams discovered several hygiene-related violations across hospital canteens. The most common issues included:
-
Lack of a dedicated storage area
-
Dirty and poorly maintained exhaust systems
-
Uncovered and unlabelled food items stored in refrigerators
-
Food items placed directly on the ground
-
Uncovered dustbins in food preparation areas
Legal Action for Serious Breaches
Food safety officers informed hospital authorities that they would issue notices under the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006, and its associated Rules and Regulations of 2011, if they found any violations. In cases of serious non-compliance, they would initiate legal proceedings and file cases before the concerned Adjudication Officers. The GHMC has emphasised its commitment to ensuring safe, hygienic food practices in institutions that cater to vulnerable populations such as hospital patients.
