Government Extends BIS Timeline for Aluminium Cans

Government Extends BIS Timeline for Aluminium Cans

Key Update

The government will implement the extended BIS certification deadline for mandatory quality control standards on aluminium cans, giving relief to beverage makers as demand rises.

Staggered Implementation for Different Enterprises

The Cookware, Utensils, and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2026, will be implemented in stages:

  • Large enterprises: October 2026
  • Small units: January 2027
  • Micro enterprises: April 2027

Manufacturers and importers must ensure their cans meet Indian Standards and display the BIS Standard Mark with a valid license. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued the order on January 15.

Tackling Supply Challenges

Beverage companies have faced potential shortages due to limited domestic production. Manufacturers such as BALL Beverage Packaging India and Can-Pack India have reached full capacity and will require 6–12 months to commission new lines. BIS certification rules also restrict quick imports from abroad. The extended timeline allows beverage makers to meet peak summer demand while domestic manufacturers expand production capacity.

Industry Benefits

The extension supports companies using aluminium cans for beverages and premium food products. With rising consumption of canned beverages, particularly among millennials, the move ensures adequate supply during the busiest season while maintaining strict quality compliance under the Food Safety and Standards framework.
