Health Hazards Uncovered in Hyderabad: Food Safety Task Force Inspects Santosh Nagar Restaurants

Report

On November 2, 2024, a food safety task force inspected businesses in Hyderabad‘s Santosh Nagar area, identifying numerous violations at three dining establishments.

Unhygienic Conditions at Hotel Sri Raghavendra Udupi

At Hotel Sri Raghavendra Udupi, inspectors noted stagnant water, dirty refrigerators, a cockroach infestation, uncovered trash bins, and mouldy ginger in storage. They described the kitchen floor as “improperly sloped,” with a “patchy and slippery” surface. Uncovered and unlabeled food items filled the refrigerators, and bags of wheat flour lay directly on the floor without space between them and the walls. Food handlers lacked head caps, gloves, and aprons, and the FBO [Food Business Operator] failed to maintain temperature logs, pest control records, and medical fitness certificates.

Name Confusion and Hygiene Risks at Swathi Hotel

At Swathi Hotel, inspectors found inconsistencies with the establishment’s name. The display board showed “Swathi Hotel,” while the license listed the name as “Hotel Swagath.” The FBO did not display its FSSAI license, and medical certificates for food workers were missing. Inspectors found damaged wall tiles, uneven flooring, stagnant water, uncovered trash bins, and burlap sacks used as waste containers. They discarded synthetic dyes, which were allegedly used in cooking. Food handlers did not wear head coverings, gloves, or aprons; the refrigerators contained uncovered and unlabeled food. The kitchen’s open doors and windows lacked insect screens.

Cockroach Infestation and Expired Food: Safety Lapses at Hotel Sweekar

At Hotel Sweekar, inspectors found cockroaches infesting kitchen shelves, expired Malabar Parottas, and vegetables stored directly on the floor. The kitchen lacked trash bins, and standing water made the uneven floor slippery. Peeling paint covered the walls and ceilings, while doors and windows were missing proper insect screens. Rice bags sat pressed against the walls without spacing, and several food handlers worked without headgear or aprons. The FBO failed to display its FSSAI license and maintain staff medical fitness certificates.
