Jaipur Health Department Warns Against Surge in Fake Ghee

Key Development

With demand for ghee rising, the Jaipur health department has warned consumers about the growing sale of adulterated ghee in packaging that imitates trusted brands.

Recent enforcement drives in Jaipur and nearby districts have led officials to seize thousands of litres of suspected fake ghee. Investigations found that operators often mix vegetable oils such as palm oil, then add artificial flavour and colour to replicate the smell and appearance of pure ghee. Authorities have advised consumers to carefully examine packaging, printing quality and labelling before purchasing.

Fake Saras-Branded Ghee Racket Exposed in Bharatpur

On Friday, in Bharatpur district, Saras Dairy — officially the Bharatpur Milk Producer Cooperative Union — helped uncover a counterfeit ghee operation.

Officials received inputs that fake ghee was being sold in Saras-branded packets at a mall near Saras Chowraha. To verify the complaint, the Managing Director arranged for a trusted person to buy a packet from the outlet. When officials compared the purchased packet with an authentic Saras product, they noticed differences in wrapper printing and packaging quality, confirming it was counterfeit.

Adulterated Ghee Unit Seized in Jodhpur

About a week earlier, food safety officers raided a fake ghee manufacturing unit in Nandpuri Yojana, Anganwa, under the Mandor police station limits in Jodhpur.

Officials said the accused mixed palm oil with low-grade ghee, added essence to create a ghee-like aroma and colour, and pasted labels of established brands before selling the product at cheaper rates in villages. During questioning, the accused reportedly admitted sourcing palm oil locally from Jodhpur and procuring low-cost ghee from Uttar Pradesh.
