Jaipur Mayonnaise Unit Caught Using Banned Whitening Agent

Jaipur Mayonnaise Unit Caught Using Banned Whitening Agent

Key Development

Food safety officers on Wednesday inspected a sauce and mayonnaise manufacturing unit in the Kho Nagoriyan area in Jaipur and uncovered multiple violations. During the inspection, the team found that the unit allegedly used titanium dioxide to enhance the whiteness of mayonnaise, even though the ingredient did not appear on the product label. The Food Safety and Standards Act prohibits the use of titanium dioxide in mayonnaise, making the violation particularly serious.

Supplies to Local Food Stalls

During questioning, officials inspected Messrs Shri Shyam Food and learned that the unit primarily supplies mayonnaise to local food stalls. A health department official said the owner, Lavanish Karmchandani, informed officers about the distribution network, raising concerns about the potential scale of public exposure through frequently consumed street food.

Infested Stock Destroyed, Action Planned

Following these findings, officers took immediate enforcement action. The team destroyed around 1,250 kg of starch solution after detecting mosquito infestation and seized 100 litres of mayonnaise. Officials said they will initiate action against the unit under food safety regulations for the violations and deficiencies identified during the inspection.
