Kerala to launch hotel grading based on hygiene and facilities

Kerala to launch hotel grading based on hygiene and facilities

Report

Consumers in Kerala will soon be able to check the grading of hotels and restaurants before stepping in. The State Consumer Affairs Department is preparing a draft bill to implement a four-tier grading system based on infrastructure and service quality.

Grading Based on Hygiene, Amenities, and Quality

The new grading system will evaluate hotels and restaurants—regardless of size—based on various criteria such as:

  • Cleanliness and hygiene

  • Food quantity and quality

  • Toilet facilities

  • Dedicated rooms for breastfeeding mothers

  • Seating areas for staff

Establishments interested in participating can voluntarily register for the scheme. Authorities will conduct inspections to verify if the businesses meet the set standards before awarding grades. The grading will be reviewed annually.

Higher Facilities Mean Higher Grades

The scheme aims to reward better-performing establishments with a higher grading system, depending on the range and quality of facilities offered. Consumer Affairs Minister G. R. Anil chaired a meeting with department officials to discuss the initiative. The government plans to introduce the bill in the Legislative Assembly within this year.
