Key Development
Kerala has launched its first Food Street at Kasturba Nagar, Panampilly Nagar, Kochi, marking a major step towards becoming a global food destination. The initiative offers a safe, hygienic dining experience with a diverse range of local and international cuisines. The food street is part of the Central Government’s effort to modernise 100 food streets across India. It is a joint project between the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), Kochi Corporation, the National Health Mission, and the State Food Safety Department. The street features 20 kiosks serving a variety of dishes, from traditional Kerala fare like puttu and appam to fusion snacks and international options such as Italian, Korean, and Chinese cuisines.
Rigorous Vendor Selection and Hygiene Standards
The vendors underwent a thorough selection process to ensure high standards of hygiene and food quality. Experts, including Food Safety officials and culinary professionals, reviewed all applicants. Each kiosk specialises in one cuisine, and the Food Safety Department will conduct regular inspections to maintain strict cleanliness protocols and ensure food safety.
Infrastructure and Amenities
The food street is designed to provide a safe and pleasant experience for visitors. It includes waste treatment systems, clean restrooms, and ample parking. A dedicated agency will handle the cleaning of cooking utensils at each kiosk, ensuring high hygiene standards across the board.
Expansion Plans for Other Cities
Funded with 60% support from the Central Government, 40% from the State, and an additional Rs 30 lakh from GCDA, this food street serves as the first of many. The initiative plans to expand to other cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kozhikode in the near future.
A New Culinary Destination
With a focus on safety and quality, the food street offers a wide array of dishes, prepared with top-quality ingredients. Kochi now has a vibrant food destination, providing locals and tourists with a safe, diverse, and enjoyable culinary experience.
