Kozhikode authorities ensure safe use of recycled cooking oil for biodiesel

Report

The authorities in Kozhikode have reassured the public, stating that the recent Kollam incident, where food prepared with recycled oil mixed with plastic covers, poses no cause for concern. The district collects 10,000 litres of used cooking oil every month and repurposes it into biodiesel.

Investigation of Previous Incidents

Authorities also addressed a similar issue with sugar, where plastic melted into the product. They explained that the sugar had been stored in plastic for an extended period, causing it to liquefy. In contrast, they clarified that plastic mixing with used cooking oil in Kozhikode is unlikely. They believe the plastic likely melted due to heat exposure but did not mix with the oil.

Recycling Efforts and Safety Measures

Private agencies collect used cooking oil from various food establishments in Kozhikode and repurpose it for biodiesel production. These agencies purchase the used oil at rates of 50 to 60 rupees per litre, ensuring its safe handling. Authorities emphasize that all oil collected for biodiesel production undergoes transparent and safe processing, preventing any misleading claims.
