Key Update
The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, along with the Food Safety Department and the National Health Mission (NHM), will open the city’s much-awaited Beach Food Street by September 30. The project puts hygiene and food safety at its core, aiming to deliver a clean and regulated street food experience.
Authorities Deploy Custom Carts for Safe Food Vending
Officials have already set up over 60 of the planned 90 custom-designed food carts along a 240-metre stretch of Kozhikode beach. Metal Industries Limited manufactured the movable carts, based on designs from De Earth, with each unit costing about ₹3 lakh. The carts support hygienic cooking, serving, and waste handling. The Corporation will assign the carts to eligible vendors through a lottery on Friday. Before operations begin, officials will train all selected vendors in food safety, hygiene protocols, and clean preparation techniques, ensuring compliance from the outset. Teams have already installed a transformer and are now laying underground cables to support smooth and safe operations. The Corporation has designed the site to ensure cleanliness, proper waste disposal, and an organised layout.
Multiple Agencies Fund the ₹4.06 Crore Project
The project draws funding from several sources:
- ₹2.41 crore from the National Urban Livelihoods Mission
- ₹1 crore from the Food Safety Department
- The Kozhikode Corporation contributes the remaining amount
City Promises Clean, Quality Street Food
Officials will monitor food quality strictly once the food street opens. With a variety of North and South Indian cuisines, the space aims to attract locals and tourists while setting a new standard for safe and hygienic street food in Kerala.
