Meghalaya Bakery Sealed for Using Newspapers in Baking

Meghalaya Bakery Sealed for Using Newspapers in Baking

Report

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) sealed RB Store, a popular bakery in Shillong in Meghalaya, after discovering it used newspapers to bake bread and cakes, violating food safety norms. Officials also shut down four other establishments—Arun Hotel, Maa Kali Hotel, and two fast-food outlets—as part of a wider crackdown on food safety violations.

FSSAI Flags Health Risks from Newspaper Use

Inspections revealed serious hygiene and safety breaches. Officials warned that using newspapers for baking is dangerous because chemicals in the ink can seep into food. To curb such practices, FSSAI intensified its enforcement drive across Meghalaya. The authority issued warnings, imposed penalties, and ordered closures for several outlets as part of efforts to protect public health.

Penalties Under Food Safety Act: Heavy Fines, Jail

The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, allows authorities to impose fines of up to ₹5 lakh and sentence violators to imprisonment for selling unsafe or adulterated food. Officials said repeat offenders could face license cancellations and prosecution under the law. They confirmed that investigations are underway and announced plans to conduct more surprise inspections in the coming days.
