Merck and Tinkle Launch Food Safety Comic Books

Leading pharmaceutical company Merck partnered with Tinkle to launch two engaging comic books at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Part of Merck’s #SafeFoodFirst campaign, which promotes food safety, the books debuted before an audience of over 200 students from Bengaluru’s government schools.

Comics for Food Safety Awareness

Titled Rishi’s Great Farm Adventure and Rishi’s Street Food Discovery, the comics break down the complex topic of microbial contamination into an approachable format for young readers. By following Rishi’s food journey, these stories aim to raise food safety awareness among children, encouraging safe food practices and illustrating the impact of microbial contamination on everyday food.

Interactive Food Safety Activities for Students

To make the event interactive, organizers planned several activities focused on safe food habits. In a lively food safety quiz, children decided whether to “eat” or “discard” foods based on expiration dates. Additionally, students showcased their artwork, creating superhero illustrations centred on their favourite foods. During the event, Dr. Veena Panicker hosted a Q&A session, answering questions that sparked curiosity about food safety. In a final activity, students took a food safety pledge, committing to healthy eating and hygiene.

Exploring Germ Detection and Safe Food Practices

Following the interactive session, students participated in the SPARK™ program to explore the topic of “germ detection,” deepening their understanding of microbiological safety. The event also featured a screening of Science Behind Food Safety, a documentary highlighting the vital role of safe practices from farm to consumer. Featuring experts from labs, regulatory bodies, and farming, the film underscores the importance of innovative food safety methods and advanced testing technologies.

The Broader #SafeFoodFirst Campaign

Merck’s #SafeFoodFirst campaign, including the new comics and educational film, tackles the often-overlooked issue of microbial contamination in food, promoting knowledge and practices that contribute to a safer food supply.
