Artificially Coloured Eggs Passed Off as Desi Eggs
In a major crackdown on Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Department raided an egg godown in Moradabad. Officials found that white farm eggs were being painted with artificial colours and sold as costlier desi (country) eggs. Authorities said the racket endangered consumers’ health, as desi eggs fetch a higher price in the market. The colouring process was being carried out openly inside the godown with no adherence to food safety or hygiene standards.
Thousands of Eggs Seized, Godown Sealed
During the inspection, officials seized 4,53,600 artificially coloured eggs and 35,640 uncoloured white eggs prepared for the colouring process. The total estimated value of the stock is ₹3,89,772. The department also confiscated the chemical substances used for colouring and sealed the godown to prevent further malpractice. The raid, which continued until 3 am, revealed large-scale efforts to mislead consumers by giving farm eggs the appearance of premium desi eggs. Authorities said strict action will follow against those involved
